DESCRIPTION:This Spring Trails Half Marathon is run in the Forest of Dean at the end of March\, using the same organization (but a different course) as the Autumn event. Starting on the road adjacent to the Speech House Hotel in the heart of the forest\, the course then leaves the road to follow a loop of well maintained forest trails (with gentle inclines) before eventually leading back to the Speech House Hotel for the finish.\nThis annual event is organised by The Rotary Club of the Royal Forest of Dean and supported by the Forestry Commission. DESCRIPTION:The Bath Half Marathon – or the ‘Bath Half’ as it is affectionately known\, is one of the longest established and most popular city centre road events in the UK. It is also the largest charity fundraising event in the South West region\, raising over £2.25 million for charity in 2017 alone. \nThe course itself is fast and flat making it suitable for all abilities – for beginners whose key objective is to complete the course\, to more regular long-distance event runners\, looking to beat their personal best time. It covers a two lap 13.1 mile (21.1km) traffic-free course straddling both sides of the River Avon. DESCRIPTION:Taking place on numerous occasions every year\, The Severn Bore is an impressive tidal wave of water which works its way up the Severn Estuary over a distance of around 25 miles between Awre and Gloucester – attracting hosts of spectators\, and scores of extreme sports enthusiasts\, along the way. \nThe Severn Bore is caused by the tide from the Atlantic Ocean entering the Bristol Channel and forcing its way into the Severn Estuary\, filtering into a narrow channel and causing the water to rise by anything up to 15 metres. There is a rich collection of wassail songs from the villages around Stroud and this corner of the Cotswolds.\nThe songs reflect a tradition that was widespread in England but is somewhat different to the apple wassailing that has become popular in recent times.\nClose to 12th Night\, the wassailers would go from door to door\, or around the pubs\, carrying a wassail bowl and singing a wassailing song. The theme is to wish everyone a prosperous year. \nWith some 34 morris sides and mummers plays\, rumour has it that Stroud Wassail has become the largest Wassail in the UK. We can’t verify that\, but we were pretty impressed by the number of sides that came from places as diverse as Devon\, Suffolk\, Leicester\, Birmingham and Cardiff to join in. \nhttp://stroudwassail.com/
