DESCRIPTION:The term wassail goes back to anglo-saxon times and is a form of toast. “Waes Hael” – Be of good health. The reply to this toast is for the company to say “Drinc hael” – Drink healthily.\nWassailing in the Stroud area was practised until the 1960s\, and is now gradually being revived. There is a rich collection of wassail songs from the villages around Stroud and this corner of the Cotswolds.\nThe songs reflect a tradition that was widespread in England but is somewhat different to the apple wassailing that has become popular in recent times.\nClose to 12th Night\, the wassailers would go from door to door\, or around the pubs\, carrying a wassail bowl and singing a wassailing song. The theme is to wish everyone a prosperous year. \nWith some 34 morris sides and mummers plays\, rumour has it that Stroud Wassail has become the largest Wassail in the UK. We can’t verify that\, but we were pretty impressed by the number of sides that came from places as diverse as Devon\, Suffolk\, Leicester\, Birmingham and Cardiff to join in. \nhttp://stroudwassail.com/

SUMMARY:Bisley Well Dressing 2019
DESCRIPTION:Bisley Well Dressing 2019\nMost well-dressing customs take place in Derbyshire and the Peak District\, so the tradition at Bisley in Gloucestershire is very unusual for its location. Every Ascension Day afternoon there is a short service in All Saints Church\, then pupils in antique costume from Bisley Blue Coat School form a processon through the streets to the wells carrying decorated bearings\, accompanied by the clergy and a silver band. The bearings consist of flower covered letters spelling ASCENSION and the date as well as hoops and Stars of David\, and you can view them in the school playground before the service\, after which a procession follows the local band down to the wells where the bearings are hung up. A blessing and singing follow beside the flower bedecked wells\, then all are welcome to a tea provided by the WI inside the Village Hall.The wells were restored in 1863 and the tradition has been upheld ever since. \nIn 2019 Ascension Day falls on Thursday 30th May. DESCRIPTION:The Cooper’s Hill Cheese-Rolling is an annual event held on the Spring Bank Holiday at Cooper’s Hill\, near Gloucester in England. It is traditionally done by and for the people who live in the local village of Brockworth\, but now people from all over the world take part. The Guardian called it a “world-famous event”\, and indeed\, in 2013\, a 27-year-old American man and a 39-year-old Japanese man each won one of the four races. DESCRIPTION:Randwick Wap 2019\nThe Randwick Wap is a series of events during spring which culminates in a traditional procession and festival dating back to the Middle Ages. Various theories exist on how it began\, although most villagers believe it was a celebration that followed the completion of building Randwick’s parish church. The Wap was revived by Randwick’s late vicar\, Rev. Nial Morrison\, in 1972 and has steadily grown to become one of the region’s leading annual events.\nIt is a great free afternoon out for families and we have visited on many occasions.
